Stepping Stones

At the Heian Jingu Shrine, a series of stepping stones (Garyu-kyo) crosses over a pond in the middle garden. These stones were formerly piers of two bridges over the Kamo-gawa River, built by the conqueror Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536 - 1598). The arrangement of the stones is such that a person stepping from one to the next will have a perception of riding a flying dragon, with the sky reflected in the pond below.
