View of Ginkaku-ji Sand Garden
Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion) is a Zen temple which was intended to emulate Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion). The original plan was to cover its exterior in silver foil, but was thwarted by the Ōnin War (1467 - 1477). The Japanese sand garden was designed by landscape artist Sōami, and includes the elements Ginshadan (Sea of Silver Sand, pictured here) and Kogetsudai (Moon Viewing Platform).
